What Do You Trust Yourself to Handle?
Confidence is a reading of evidence, and the evidence sometimes says to trust yourself less. That counts as the method working.
The version of confidence worth having is calibrated. It rises and falls with what actually happened, which makes action the way you gather it — and also the way you find out you had overestimated yourself. Both directions are the method doing its job.
Chris separates confidence in the outcome from confidence in your response. The deeper form is the second one: some trust that you could handle it going badly. That stays available even when the outcome is genuinely uncertain, and it asks for none of the certainty or charisma that usually gets mistaken for it.
Low confidence is sometimes simply correct. Where capability is genuinely thin, the answer is skill rather than self-belief. The episode keeps self-trust and honest humility in tension instead of resolving them into a rule.

Name the evidence about yourself you have been ignoring — in either direction — and take one action that would give you better evidence.
