What Makes Risk Survivable?
Some risks look heroic only because the downside would be unabsorbable. Stability is what makes a choice proportionate.
Stability here means the system can take a hit: runway, recoverability, people, arrangements that hold when something goes wrong. A life can also look stable because nothing has changed yet, which is a different and far more fragile thing.
This is why it sits next to courage. Runway changes the economics of a risk — the same decision can be reckless in one year and reasonable in another, with nothing altered except what happens if it fails. The episode goes looking for single points of failure, since most of what breaks a plan is one dependency nobody had named.
It stops short of two familiar substitutes. Wealth is not the definition, and structural instability is not a discipline problem; some conditions are set by the situation rather than the person. Preparation can also become its own way of postponing the life, and the episode leaves security and responsiveness pulling against each other.
What this episode asks of you
Take the choice you keep deferring, and ask what would have to be true for it to be proportionate rather than existential.
