Is the Exchange Still Worth It?

Work does not need to be a calling to matter. It needs to be an exchange that still makes sense.

Here the season crosses into the places a life is actually lived, and it starts with work, because work is where most capacity gets spent. The frame is an exchange: what the role requires, what it returns, and whether those two still justify each other now rather than five years ago.

Cost includes more than hours. It includes the recovery the job consumes and the participation it displaces — the evenings, the trips not taken, the friendships that thinned without anyone deciding. Meaning can come from the work itself or from what the work makes possible elsewhere, and both of those are legitimate.

A job can stop being right without becoming bad, and demanding work is not automatically a smaller life. Another person could look at the same demanding job and judge the trade differently. That is the episode's complication, and the reason it does not end in advice to quit.
