Who Is Your Life Still Connected To?

Adult connection thins through logistics far more often than through conflict. Nobody decides to lose touch.

Relationships that were automatic — through work, a school, a neighborhood, a shared stage of family life — become deliberate the moment the structure holding them goes. Most people never notice the handover, which is how a life ends up socially thinner than anyone chose.

The episode is about being socially inhabited rather than well-networked. Different depths of connection do different jobs, and a life concentrated in one or two ties is carrying a risk it has usually not noticed. Reciprocity matters here without becoming fifty-fifty accounting.

It resists the obvious conclusion that every old friendship should be revived. Some connections have finished. Some should change form. And going first is worth doing without the guilt ledger this subject usually arrives with.
